BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL BANS PLASTIC STRAWS
At LOUD events we are strong believers in sustainability and keeping our beautiful city clean, we are very excited about the progressiveness of the Brisbane City Council moving forward with this motion and taking another step to cutting down on event waste.
Brisbane City Council recognises that the Quirk led LNP administration is the most environmentally conscious administration in the city’s history. Noting that: Brisbane City Council is certified 100 per cent carbon neutral and Australia’s largest carbon neutral organisation; Brisbane is regularly recognised as Australia’s most sustainable city; Brisbane is one of Australia’s top three clean air cities with a 30 per cent decrease in nitrogen dioxide levels; Brisbane has 50 per cent less rubbish on city streets since 2009 and 13 per cent less in domestic waste to landfill per person since 2008; as part of the Brisbane City Plan 2014 4000 kilometres of local waterway corridors are now protected; Brisbane has 41 community gardens and city farms growing local food; Brisbane has more green star-rated buildings than any Australia city with 30 per cent of inner-city buildings green star-certified, including Brisbane City Hall which achieved Australia’s first green star rating for a heritage listed public building. In keeping with this record, council will now demonstrate leadership to improve and protect the health of our waterways and Moreton Bay by acting to ban the use of single plastic drinking straws, and phase out helium balloons and single-use plastic bottles, in all council operations and encourage council sponsored events to do the same.” LNP’s urgency motion
